Tutorial: Upload Exam Results from a Spreadsheet

The seven-step upload wizard — picking the sheet, telling it which row is the header, mapping columns, and matching rows to students.

Last updated Sat Sep 05

Unlike the student importer, the results uploader does not care what order your columns are in — you tell it, in the wizard. So you can upload the marking spreadsheet a teacher already keeps, without reshaping it first.

Steps

The wizard has seven steps and a progress indicator across the top. You can go back at any point.

  1. Pick file — choose the workbook.
  2. Pick sheet — if it has several sheets, choose one. Each is listed with its row count, which is usually enough to spot the right one.
  3. Header row — tell it which row holds your column headings. Marking spreadsheets often have a title and a blank row above the real header; this is where you account for that.
  4. Columns — map each column to what it holds: the student identifier, the marks, and anything to ignore. Columns you don't map are skipped.
  5. Matching — the wizard matches each row to a student in the class and shows you the result. This is the step that matters. Unmatched rows are the ones to look at: usually a stray space, a name spelled differently from the enrolment record, or a student in a different class.
  6. Review — the final list of what will be written. Confirm the count against your sheet.
  7. Upload — confirm, and it writes.

If rows won't match

  • Match on Student ID rather than name wherever the sheet has one; names are the usual culprit.
  • A student who has left, or was never enrolled in this class, will never match. Remove the row.
  • Fix the spreadsheet and restart the wizard rather than forcing a partial upload — you can always fill in a handful of stragglers by hand afterwards with Add Results.
