Teachers: Write Progress Reports

Filling in a term's reports for your class, what "Not rated" and "unsaved" mean, and why publishing isn't yours to press.

Last updated Sat Sep 05

At the end of term, Exams → Progress Reports is where your written assessment goes. The marks are already there — they come from the exam results — so your job is the part a spreadsheet can't produce.

Steps

  1. Open Exams → Progress Reports.
  2. Choose your class and the term. Nothing loads until you pick both.
  3. Your students appear with their marks filled in.
  4. Work down the list. Every field you leave empty shows as Not rated, which is a legitimate value for anything your institute doesn't assess — it is not an error you have to clear.
  5. Watch for the "unsaved" marker. A row you have typed into but not saved is flagged. Don't navigate away, and don't close the tab, while any row is showing it.
  6. Save.

You can come back to a partly-finished class as many times as you need.

Writing them

Two things worth knowing before you start:

  • What you write is read by parents, verbatim, in the parent portal — not summarised, not paraphrased by the office.
  • Once the term is published, corrections are visible to anyone who already opened the report. It is worth reading a comment back once before saving rather than fixing it afterwards.

Publishing

Publish is usually not a teacher's action, and it is deliberately separate from saving. It is what makes the whole term's reports visible to parents at once, and it confirms first. If you have the button, use it only when the entire class is finished — not per student.

If the marks look wrong

Fix them at the source, in the exam, rather than working around them here. Saved marks raise a change request when edited — see Enter Exam Results.
